Why Air Conditioning Is Essential for Schools?

Let’s time travel back to our childhood! When I was a kid, the summer days were the worst ones. And of course, like all the other kids, I made dozens and dozens of paper fans, but I still sweated the entire day. However, today’s generation is lucky to have air conditioning. So, let’s discover the reasons why air conditioning is essential for schools!

Better Air Quality

Teacher, Learning, School, Teaching

The air in a classroom can often consist of dust and bacteria. Studies have indicated that students who breathe in this air tend to have a low Grade Point Average or GPA, which refers to an indicator that measures how well a student scored in a course. These air pollutants can affect the grades of pupils and lead to health problems that can cause students to miss valuable school time.

However, air conditioning systems can filter the air and remove dust particles and pollutants from the atmosphere, thus creating better air quality in a classroom. But there’s one thing that you need to make sure of, which is that the air filters should be changed on a regular basis. Why? It can protect the HVAC system from damage and ensure a cleaner and healthier air quality.

Less Risks of Heat Stroke and Dehydration

In summertime, excessive heat can lead to heat-related illnesses such as heatstroke and guys please don’t underestimate this health condition. You will be shocked to learn that between 1975 and 2009, there have been nearly 135 cases of accidental death due to heatstroke that occurred in some schools in Japan. Heatstroke is a common health condition that arises easily when temperatures and humidity are high and if not given immediate treatment, it can result in serious long-term issues.

Moreover, during extreme heat periods, children are also vulnerable to dehydration and as a parent myself, I know how difficult it can be to get kids to drink water. However, by controlling the air quality, air conditioning units can reduce the possibilities of these problems.

Less Risks of Asthma Attacks

Nowadays, there are many children who are victims of asthma. For instance, as per the American Lung Association, around 7 million children in the United States have asthma. Hence, some kids have a high possibility of having an asthma attack in a classroom with a poor air quality.

The only way to avoid this is air conditioning. Air conditioning units consist of air filters that can remove pollen, pollutants, mold, mildew and indoor allergens, like dust mites that can trigger asthma attacks.

Focus on Studies

School, Draw, Drawing, Education, Pencil

Honestly, I won’t blame my kid if he cannot concentrate in a hot classroom. Mind you, that’s not because I also bunked school to go chill with my friends at the local arcade.

Did you know, according to a study, when children are exposed to high temperatures in a classroom, their brains stop concentrating and instead focus on cooling the body down? This means that it’s taking up bodily resources which could have been used for learning. And these physical demands that disturb the brain function also affect the teaching staff.

This lack of focus will indirectly impact on the academic performance of students. For example, numerous studies have shown that children’s performance tends to decrease with higher classroom temperatures. For instance, kids tend to develop headaches and exhaustion symptoms in warmer classrooms which inhibit their learning.

And for all those parents who think that the absence of air conditioning has absolutely no correlation with the academic achievement of their kids, allow me to tell you that a study of 4.5 million New York City high school exams proved that higher classroom temperatures create a 12.3% higher likelihood of failing an exam. Moreover, it is quite evident that mistakes can happen during an exam in an overheated environment.

A Comfortable Environment

Nowadays, there are many schools that are limited in terms of teaching space. I can’t even imagine how children can study in overcrowded classrooms, now add the high temperatures. However, air conditioning systems would provide a certain comfort level that can help create a better learning environment for students.
